One thing I've always wanted is a Japanese maple tree. I love the pop of red and the compact size. It's a tree I've wanted to plant since we bought our little house, but I've been put off by the price.
After we moved the sail shade post this spring, a big hole was left in the perfect spot for a wee tree.
I thought about it all summer, and after having a very busy month of freelancing in July, I figured I had brought in enough extra income to justify the price.
For under $100, I was able to get this small beauty and a high acidity soil to make it feel at home. The best part is, the tree looks like it's always been there, and the shot of red surrounded by the greens of the oaks and evergreens is just lovely.

The moment I finished planting the tree, a butterfly landed next to me as if telling me it approved of the new addition to the yard.
What else have I been doing while my blog idled? I finished my writing class. It was fun and very helpful. I don't do much creative writing anymore, and allowing myself the chance to do so fed a part of me I hadn't realized was starving. Plus, I have been busy with the aforementioned freelancing, and my Charles and I have been continuing to work on the deck. It's been hot here, really hot, over 100 degrees Fahrenheit hot, so that process has been slow. We're getting there. Just a bit longer, and we should have a deck again -- and something of the process to share.
